Orchids really are the jewels of the plant kingdom. Spring is the best time to see them in the Mediterranean, from March to early April. Among the more unusual are the tongue orchids (Serapias) and bee orchids (Ohprys) which are a common feature of the Mediterranean garrigue. Interestingly, bee orchid flowers mimic female bees and dupe male bees into attempting to mate with the flowers, thus facilitating pollination.
