The western Mediterranean has one of the richest floras in the world. From Portugal’s Algarve in the west to Italy in the east, this floristic region boasts a dazzling myriad of species. Hillsides and clifftops in spring are a riot of reds, yellows and pinks; golden carline thistles and prickly wild artichokes burst into bloom under the sizzling summer Mediterranean sun; and sea quills send up their impossibly tall spires of white flowers in early autumn. And amid this blaze of colour are a plethora of regional rarities and curiosities, including bizarre bee orchids, delicate daffodils, and rare broomrapes. This website showcases some of the beautiful, the spectacular, and the unusual wild flowers from one of the global biodiversity hotspots.
